Perak Corp seeks OWG expertise for its Ipoh theme park MAPS to greater height

Perak Corp seeks OWG expertise for its Ipoh theme park MAPS to greater height

TO enhance the operations, management, and marketing of the Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS) in Ipoh, the theme park will be working with the country’s pioneer recreational, and amusement theme park company.

Perak Corporation Bhd's subsidiary is in talks with Only World Group Bhd (OWG) for the latter to manager and operate its  theme park, Movie Animation Park Studios in Bandar Meru Raya, Ipoh.

Perak Corp's 51% owned Animation Theme Park Sdn Bhd (ATP) had entered into a heads of agreement with OWG  to negotiate for a potential collaboration for the theme park.

ATP is the developer, operator and owner of MAPS, an animation theme park, with more than 40 attractions in six thematic zones.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir witnessed the signing ceremony between ATP chairman Datuk Aminuddin Md Desa and OWG founder Tan Sri Richard Koh at his office.

In his speech, Aminuddin said the agreement will allow the company to bring in more local and foreign tourists to MAPS.

The head of agreement  enables ATP and OWG to explore and negotiate with a view to execute a definitive management services agreement for OWG to manage and operate the theme park.

“We are hoping to see an increase in tourists visiting Ipoh, and in Perak generally. The theme park was opened around the middle of last year, and we will soon be unveiling it’s final zone. So is it timely to promote the park and to bring in more business for the industry,” he said.
Koh, who is dubbed the “King of Malaysian Theme Parks”, said OWG was established in 1973 with the purpose of creating and designing fun centres for families, as well as roller-skating rinks in the country.
He said over the years, the company undertook significant projects such as Resorts World Genting, Universal Studios Singapore, Wet World Waterparks, Sunway Lagoon Resort, and Desa Water Park.
Among the company’s latest accomplishments is TOP@Komtar, the indoor theme park in the iconic Komtar tower in Penang, and the soon-to-open tallest rope course in Malaysia called Gravityz, on the same building’s 65th floor
“We don’t only operate parks, and we have also designed and built them in Malaysia as well as in India, Indonesia and Thailand.
“So when we got the opportunity to collaborate with the Perak government to enhance MAPS, add value to the park, and market the tourist destination, we were overwhelmed,” he added.
Zambry, in his speech, said the agreement would be beneficial for all parties involved.
He said it would be more difficult for MAPS to move forward if it were to work alone.
“We all need to work together to promote Perak, and put MAPS on the world map.
“We are looking at ways to expand the theme park, but that will be explored later,” he added.
